Shopify Plus sounds like the natural next step when a store starts growing.
More features, more flexibility, more power.
But here’s the reality, not every store needs Shopify Plus.
In some cases, upgrading too early can actually slow you down or add unnecessary cost.
Here’s how I think about it.
What Shopify Plus Actually Gives You
Before deciding whether to upgrade, it’s important to understand what you’re actually getting.
Some of the key benefits include:
- More control over checkout (customisation and scripts)
- Advanced automation with Shopify Flow
- Better support and account management
- More flexibility for scaling operations
These are powerful, but only if you actually need them.
When Shopify Plus Makes Sense
There are certain situations where upgrading is a clear win.
1. You’re Scaling Quickly
If your store is growing fast and you’re hitting limitations, Plus can help support that growth.
2. You Need Advanced Checkout Control
Custom checkout experiences, more control over discounts, and tailored flows are a big reason to upgrade.
3. You’re Running Complex Operations
If you’ve got multiple markets, large product ranges, or complex workflows, Plus can make things easier to manage.
4. You’re Investing in Optimisation
If you’re actively improving conversion rate and testing different experiences, Plus gives you more flexibility.
When Shopify Plus Doesn’t Make Sense
This is just as important.
1. Your Store Isn’t Converting Yet
If your current store isn’t performing well, upgrading won’t fix that.
You’re better off focusing on fundamentals first, like I cover in why your Shopify store isn’t converting.
2. You Don’t Need the Features
If you’re not going to use the advanced functionality, there’s no real benefit.
3. You Haven’t Optimised What You Already Have
Most stores don’t fully utilise standard Shopify.
I see this a lot in common Shopify mistakes and store audits.
4. You’re Expecting It to Increase Sales Automatically
Shopify Plus is a tool, not a solution.
It won’t fix UX issues, poor product pages, or weak messaging.
What I’d Do First Instead
Before even thinking about upgrading, I’d focus on:
- Improving product pages
- Fixing mobile UX
- Optimising speed
- Simplifying the user journey
These will usually have a much bigger impact on conversion rate.
If you’re not sure where to start, my audit framework is a good place to begin.
Final Thoughts
Shopify Plus can be a great investment, but only at the right time.
If you’ve outgrown standard Shopify and need more control, it makes sense.
If you’re still working on the basics, it’s probably not the priority.
Focus on getting the fundamentals right first.
